Deadweight Tonnage (DWT)
Deadweight tonnage measures the total weight a ship can safely carry: cargo, fuel, fresh water, ballast, provisions and crew, expressed in metric tons. It is the standard indicator of a vessel's carrying capacity, whereas gross tonnage measures internal volume and TEU counts container slots.
A large container ship may exceed 200,000 DWT. The measure is taken at the summer load line — the maximum draft allowed in summer conditions.
