VTS (Vessel Traffic Service)
A VTS is the maritime equivalent of air traffic control: a shore-based service that monitors and organizes ship traffic in a port area or congested waterway, using radar, AIS and radio. It provides information, traffic organization and navigational assistance to prevent collisions and groundings.
Major ports and critical straits operate VTS centers with which vessels must check in at designated reporting points. Whether a port operates a VTS is one of the facility attributes listed in the World Port Index.
