Methodology
Distances come from real shipping lanes (computed with the open-source searoute engine over actual maritime routes, canals included), not straight lines on a map. Carbon intensity comes from the verified EU MRV reports: grams of CO₂ per tonne of cargo per nautical mile, either the container-fleet average of the latest reporting year or the specific ship you select.
The estimate covers the sea leg only: it excludes inland transport, port handling, and non-CO₂ greenhouse gases. Real-world results vary with vessel utilisation, weather and routing — treat the figure as a sound order of magnitude for comparing options, not as an invoice-grade measurement.
