Hapag-Lloyd — container fleet

63 ships2.10 Mt CO₂ in 2025

The Hapag-Lloyd container fleet counts 63 ships reporting under the EU MRV regulation — the 5th largest reporting fleet — with a combined 2.10 Mt of verified CO₂ emissions in 2025. Every figure on this page comes from the yearly verified reports each ship files with EMSA.

Its total emissions went from 1.43 Mt of CO₂ in 2018 to 2.1 Mt in 2025, a trajectory that reflects both fleet size and operational efficiency choices such as slow steaming and vessel upgrades.

Hapag-Lloyd, heir to a Hamburg shipping lineage dating back to 1847, is the world's fifth-largest container line and has staked its position on quality over volume. Since February 2025 it operates its long-haul network in the Gemini Cooperation with Maersk, the industry's boldest bet on schedule reliability, built on hub-and-spoke routing. The company has also been an active fleet moderniser, retrofitting existing ships and ordering dual-fuel newbuildings.

Its MRV-reporting fleet is smaller than those of MSC or Maersk, but its verified emissions data matters disproportionately: Hapag-Lloyd publishes among the most detailed sustainability reporting in the industry and aims for net-zero fleet operations by 2045. Comparing its verified CO₂ intensity against the fleet average is one of the cleaner reads on what disciplined fleet management achieves.
