HMM — container fleet
The HMM container fleet counts 43 ships reporting under the EU MRV regulation — the 8th largest reporting fleet — with a combined 0.83 Mt of verified CO₂ emissions in 2025. Every figure on this page comes from the yearly verified reports each ship files with EMSA.
Its total emissions went from 0.02 Mt of CO₂ in 2019 to 0.83 Mt in 2025, a trajectory that reflects both fleet size and operational efficiency choices such as slow steaming and vessel upgrades.
HMM is South Korea's flag carrier and one of shipping's great rebuilding stories. After the 2016 collapse of Hanjin Shipping — the largest bankruptcy in container history — the state-backed company ordered twelve 24,000 TEU megaships in a single stroke, led by the HMM Algeciras, the world's largest container ship at its 2020 delivery. The gamble of expanding into the pandemic turned into a windfall when freight rates exploded months later.
Those young megaships give HMM one of the most modern long-haul fleets afloat, and it shows in the verified MRV data: the Algeciras class posts among the lowest CO₂ figures per container of any ships trading to Europe. Since 2025 HMM sails in the Premier Alliance with ONE and Yang Ming.
