Key Turkish Ports and Their Economic Importance
Ports play a central role in Turkey's maritime economy. Among the best known and most active are the Port of Istanbul, which connects the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea via the Bosphorus, serving as a nerve center for goods transport between Europe and Asia. The Port of Mersin, on the Mediterranean, is the country’s largest commercial port, specialized in container transit, bulk cargo, and agricultural exports. Antwerp, İzmir, and Tekirdağ are also significant port facilities, each catering to specific needs: industrial freight, passengers, or fishing activities.
Turkey continuously invests in modernizing its port infrastructures to improve capacity and safety, thus promoting the development of maritime trade and the country’s regional position as a logistics hub.
