The nautical mile is the standard unit of distance at sea, defined as exactly 1,852 meters. It corresponds to one minute of latitude, which makes chart-based navigation calculations straightforward — hence its universal use in shipping and aviation.
Sea distances between ports are expressed in nautical miles, and dividing them by the vessel speed in knots directly gives sailing time in hours: a 10,564-nautical-mile route at 16 knots means about 27.5 days at sea.
