EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index)
The EEDI measures the CO₂ a newly built ship emits per tonne of cargo and per mile, based on its design. Mandatory for new ships since 2013 under IMO rules, it pushed shipyards toward more efficient hulls and engines. The lower the figure (in gCO₂/t·nm), the more efficient the design.
