Ro-pax ship — emissions rankings

Ro-pax ferries — carrying trucks, cars and passengers on fixed short-sea rotations — top the absolute emissions tables year after year, and duty cycle is the reason: several crossings a day, near-zero idle time, and a hotel load that never sleeps. Per transported unit on routes where the alternative is hundreds of road kilometres, their footprint reads very differently.

The type is also where electrification is happening first in merchant shipping: battery-hybrid conversions and shore power at berth are already cutting the intensity of the most modern operators — a trend the yearly MRV figures have started to register.
